Gearing Up For The Electronic-log Mandate
September 25th, 2012
Electronic onboard recorders (EOBRs) or simply electronic driver logs (EDLs), will soon be mandatory for trucking regulatory compliance. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration expects to release the new proposed EOBR rule early next year which would manadate the use of EOBRs within the industry.Though the official ruling should come in the first quarter of next year, drivers and fleet owners will have a grace period before the final rule is published, likely sometime in 2014.
“We expect that there will be a two-year grace period from when the final rule is issued, so enforcement of it will most likely start by 2015 or 2016,” Norm Ellis, vp of T&L sales, services & marketing for Qualcomm Enterprise Services (QES) told FleetOwner at the annual TMW TransForum Users’ Conference.
It might seem like the mandate is a very distant reality but fleets are advised to not wait until the last minute in choosing EOBR solutions. Getting in early allows teams to choose the right EOBR solutions and implement them with training for staff.
FleetOwner spoke about the massive demand coming for suppliers of EOBR solutions in the coming years. Since every commercial truck or truck driver will need to have a compliant logging device the demand for EOBR solutions is going to skyrocket.
Qualcomm's Ellis told FleetOwner: “Qualcomm already has over 150,000 users of our EOBR products. Internally, we are scaling our operation to meet the anticipated demand from the reg. We can now cover 600,000 concurrent users and that figure will go to 1,200,000 by next year.”
The EOBR mandate will affect millions and several types of products will step in to fill the demand from onboard computer systems to specially enabled smartphones.
The EOBR solution we recommend is a mobile computing platform, specifically the MCP50 Qualcomm released in April. It's designed for medium- to small-fleet operators to get all the computing and technology advantages of larger fleets but without the hefty price tag. The value-priced MCP50 sells from just $799 in our online store.
