Cetacea Provides Wi-Fi Network For Memphis Zoo

Cetacea Sound Inc's has installed a wireless 802.11 b/g hotspot at the Memphis Zoo and Aquarium. This system now makes the main courtyard, surrounding exhibits and cafes a hotspot allowing visitors and staff access to the network and the Zoo's web site. The unit will later become the backbone of a complete wireless network at the zoo. The equipment used was a Proxim Orinoco AP-2500 enterprise grade access point married to a sectorized high gain antenna picked especially for that area.
We also installed one of our ERMA Systems CET5100-TNCRP-5-kit in the Education building which covers all three classrooms and the Discovery Center.
When the full system is in place, zookeeper's will be able to monitors animals from home or anywhere with internet access. This will allow better care for animals that may be pregnant or sick. Also the public will have access to the Virtual Zoo and may take tours from around the world.
Both systems were donated by Cetacea to the Zoo as well all the engineering and surveys. Our plans are to adopt the Memphis Zoo and work with them closely to help provide an ever changing zoo experience. We are currently working on the Colobus Monkey exhibit to hookup their in-cage camera wirelessly to the network backbone.
The Memphis Zoo is currently taking donations to add more systems. Contact the Memphis Zoo at www.memphiszoo.org or calling 800-489-1759 and refer to this article.
