Powerline LV Solution

Where There's Electricity Let There Be Broadband

Imagine a world where high-speed Internet access could be obtained by simply plugging your computer into a power outlet equipped with a modem. Where multi-dwelling units such as apartment buildings and business offices can easily provide broadband services to their tenants simply and cost-effectively. Where utility companies can monitor the health and operation of their network while reaching out to residential customers already served by the power grid with broadband services.

Imagination is no longer required. Motorola’s Broadband over Power Line (BPL) product portfolio is a reality. It combines radio, Ethernet, networking, HomePlug™ and modem technologies to deliver high-speed data over existing power lines.

An innovative solution, Powerline MU enables service providers, building owners and businesses to transform a building’s internal electrical system into a powerful communications network. Powerline MU uses Canopy Access Points and Subscriber Modules to send signals to a Powerline MU Gateway. The Gateway then injects the signal directly into the electrical lines. For broadband access, subscribers simply plug their computer or router into the Powerline Modem. Since the Gateway is located in the building’s electrical distribution area, coordination with the electric utility is not typically needed. A licensed electrician is required for gateway installation. Click here to see how the system works.

Designed for utilities, Powerline LV is integrated with Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband platform and uses Canopy Access Points and Subscriber Modules to send, capture, and relay the wireless broadband signal to utility pole tops. A Powerline Bridge is then used to convert the signal from Ethernet to the HomePlug protocol. The Internet signal is delivered, via standard electric wires, to outlets throughout a user’s home. Subscribers receive the connection by plugging the Powerline Modem into a standard wall outlet. The Motorola Powerline LV solution was designed to deliver reliable, cost-effective performance while mitigating interference to and from nearby spectrum users. By using only the low voltage wires, system maintenance and deployment time is low and worker safety is greatly enhanced. Click here to see how the system works.
